India is a rather exceptional 13 year-old participating in the 2012 SISTER2sister program. With family support from Nan, a compassionate and fun-loving Big Sister and her own determination, India is growing in confidence, embracing new experiences and discovering how she can have a positive impact in the community.
This is India’s SISTER2sister experience.
“I joined the program in 2011 after my Nan noticed a newspaper article about the NIVEA SISTER2Sister program. It helps young girls that struggle with issues at home and self-confidence. Nanny suggested that I look into participating in the program for 2012 and rang the next day. Luckily Jessica Brown, Founder and CEO of SISTER2Sister, said there was a spot available.
We took a day to think about it and decided that I would join. We made an appointment to meet Jess and when I was in the meeting Jess rang my Big Sister Alicia. 10 minutes later Alicia arrived at the office. Alicia was a warm and welcoming woman and gave me a good first impression. I knew that I would love her.
Alicia has helped me in many different ways. She has been there when I am in doubt, she helps me to learn new stuff and she also teaches me the right way, or a different way, to look at and experience things. We both like going down giant waterslides, both love dancing and we like cooking together. We both just like to have fun!
Since I have come into the SISTER2Sister program, I have more confidence in myself. I have a new Sister in my life that I can talk to about anything at any time and I have become more outgoing. My friends in the program mean the world to me, and lucky for me I have found the right ones. Some of the outings I have enjoyed most are cooking, trapezeing, Christmas in July and fitness fun. My absolute favourites were white water rafting and surfing.
My highlight of the program has been that I have the best Big Sister ever. I love Jess and Marnee May too (SISTER2Sister staff) because they are so lovely, and they welcomed me into the SISTER2Sister family with open arms.
I have experienced being a Little Sister and I really want to become a Big Sister when I am older to help other girls like me. I have spoken to Jess about future possibilities and helping at fund raising functions by speaking about my experience in the program.
