1. What obstacles in life have you been faced with and why were you nominated for SISTER2sister?
I have fought domestic violence and escaped it alongside a nasty custody battle. I have been through sexual assault and my child has too. I have been through numerous hospital admissions due to type one diabetes. I have been thrown in all directions of life, some good and some bad. I am from a broken home and face losing my dad to a severe medical condition. I am the guardian of my younger adolescent sister (which I would love to send through the S2s program). I have faced homelessness with my kids and bought back the safety of having a roof over their heads. I’ve faced bankruptcy and close to losing everything in my life.
I was nominated for the S2s program due to depression. Due to the verbal and somewhat physical abuse in my family home, I chose to go to a father Chris riley refuge to save my sanity. From there my life started and I have never looked back even in the lowest points in my life. I would not be the woman I am today had I not done the S2s program with my big sister Julie. I hope to catch up with her and the S2s gang and hopefully one day become an inspirational speaker for the S2s program.
2. What impact has your Big Sister had on your life? Are you still in contact?
My Big Sister Jules had a massive impact on my life. I still have a lot of old traits but Julie has persuaded me to keep looking on and never ever give up. I would not trade my time with her for the skin on my back.
3. Did the SISTER2sister program make an impact on your life? If so what impact did it make?
The S2s program had a substantial and beneficial impact on my life. It gave me life long skills I still use today. I don’t think I would be as persevering had I not done the year with SISTER2sister.
My life has, is and always will benefit from the life skills I learnt, alongside the amount of patience I collected along the way.
4. What have you achieved since graduating from the program?
The biggest thing I have achieved is becoming a loving, caring, patient, sensitive and above all, great mother. My girls are my life and I would never put them through what I went through. I’m now paying off a house, engaged and living life to the fullest. My eldest daughter is starting kindergarten next year and my youngest preschool. I am enrolling in a cert2 nursing assistant course and am planning on having another baby sometime after I marry. I intend to become a registered nurse then moving on to become a paediatric doctor or a midwife.
I still have my goals in place and have many more to overcome. I wouldn’t have the determination to do any of it without the love and support from S2s.
5. Why should people support SISTER2sister?
People need to support the program. For girls like me and many others, whether the problem be big or small, they need to be addressed and acknowledged that they are not and never will be alone. S2s is a home away from home and you have the ability to free your mind and have an absolute blast with new friends that eventually become your family. I never had so much love and attention as I did with S2s. I will never forget my big awesome sisterly family and I wish I could do it all over again!!!!
